CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Police arrested a Cuban national and charged him with using gas pump skimmers in Butler and Hamilton counties to steal credit card information. Yosbel Ponce Bernal was arrested in Louisville on June 21.
A skimmer was found at a gas pump at a station in Fairfield in September. The Butler County auditor’s office removed the skimmer and found information from 27 credit cards on it.
Surveillance video of the gas pumps shows a man opening the gas pump door after the gas station had closed and installing a second skimmer in October. According to U.S. Attorney Benjamin Glassman said that man is Ponce.
In November, skimmers were found at two gas pumps in Hamilton County. Surveillance video there also allegedly shows Ponce.
Investigators say Ponce’s fingerprints were on at least one of the gas pumps. His fingerprints are on record as part of an application previously filed for asylum in the U.S.
Using a skimmer is a federal crime that could get Ponce 15 years in prison, if he’s convicted.
